Wearable Tech Pins You & I Are Loving

i2style

It’s no secret that i’m fascinated by wearable tech and what they’re able to do for not only futuristic fashion shows, but the health world and many other industries too. It’s amazing how a piece of specially designed technology could aid with someones quality of life, so i’m here to show you via Pinterest, which pins you and I have been loving recently and why they’re so interesting.

Firstly, 3D printing is booming! Companies like Strategy’s are collaborating with innovative designers, such as Van Herpen to create second skin like designs for Paris Fashion Week. (This was my most pinned image recently).

Francessca Barchiesi concept around expanding the communicative power of sign language, by reading and converting hand gestures into practical movements is pretty cool! The glove can also be used to translate sign language used by deaf people, into spoken language! For a student – Francessca’s ideas are one’s I’d love to see develop and become even more of a success.

Perfecting movement is a huge aspect of any professional dancer’s (or similar) profession. And, with the help of wearable technology, this side of ‘practice makes perfect’ has got a whole lot more advance! By electronically tracing the movement of dancers, Lesia Trubat’s uses a lily pad arduino microcontroller board to record the pressure and actions of their feet and send the signal to an electronic device.

Be summer ready with the Netatmo June

The summer season is almost upon us and many plans are being made, that admittedly, revolve around the sun! Whether it’s a holiday you’ve got booked, or plans to attend a festival, it’s now that we really need to think twice about the potential damage being done to our skin. With the health and wellness industry on the rise, and the wearable technology world set to boom, it’s products like the Netatmo June, that are truly going to make an impact!

As a health conscious nation, we are aware of the implications the sun’s rays can cause to not only our insides, but on the outside too. It’s no lie that us beauty lovers have a strict skincare routine, to prevent those lurky lines and dry skin, and part of that routine includes putting on a number of anti-wrinkle creams and SPF included moisturisers, but probably don’t take as much time to put on that all important high factor sun cream…unless we’re beginning to feel the burn.

Sending notifications to your smart phone, the June is an incredibly exciting new wearable device. With an opulent outer aesthetic and a killer inner intelligence system, using UVA and UVB sensors, the June is able to measure the amount of sun exposure to your skin, making it a pretty sassy way to monitor when you should be topping up on your sun protection and staying in the shade!

To my delight, the June is now available to buy in the beauty haven we call Space NK. Priced at £118, this nifty wearable piece is available in three classic colour ways, including gold, platinum and gunmetal. Using the free downloadable app, June is able to tell you when to re-apply SPF and at what level. A pretty valuable purchase if you think about the long term health benefits. This sort of device is something I know i’d check as much as my emails, especially when spending more and more time outdoors this summer.

Vogue’s Sarah Brown: If you were stuck on a desert island forever and allowed one product, what would that product be?

“On a desert island: Sunscreen. And every other week a new delivery would be airdropped, probably by drone”.

I’d love to know your thoughts on the beauty industry meeting with wearable tech and if this type of product is at the top of your summer wish list!

Styling with the Samsung gear 2

i2style wearable technology

Todays wearable technology spotlight post, will be focussing upon the more fashionable side of thangs! Being an avid fashion lover and tech enthusiast, with a background in fashion styling, I wanted to aid in the shifting of views, in regards to the slightly controversial, aesthetically appeal of the smart watch. I have always been a huge fan of Samsung, and haven’t owned any other make of smart phone, since I can remember! Recently, I upgraded to the new Samsung Galaxy S5, and with it, came with some rather insightful and intriguing apps. So, I recently decided to link up the Samsung Gear 2 and Gear fit, to the Gear Manager app. Not only did I discover a whole new love for these products and their capabilities, but I found styling up (more specifically) the Gear2, a joy!

As a result, i’d like to share a few of my more seasonal/transitional pieces, that I feel compliment this very cool piece of technology, well. Seeing as our AW14 season is fast approaching, I decided to pair together a mix of monochrome pieces, with delicate pops of block colours! Wearing a mixture of different textures and combining a variety of colour ways within our outfits, are just some of the huge trends coming from the catwalk this season! An example of where I’d wear this type of look, would be to an event, or a sophisticated lunch meeting, perhaps. Plus, with a great pair of statement heels and a more vibrant and graphic orientated bag, this look can take you from day to night! If that wasn’t enough, this technology piece gives you the added bonus of being able to take snaps, film your evening and take those all important phone calls, without having to rummage around within your Mary Poppins bag! Now, to me, that is convenience on my wrist!

With the Gear 2’s wallpaper choices, as well as the option of uploading your own personal photos to your home and lock screens, you really can aid in the accessorising of any outfit…with just a few taps! With this look, I chose to have a patterned orange front, and yes, I did consider my nail colour that day. Works well though, doesn’t it? I can understand the talk around the aesthetics of this particular smart watch, and how it may not be to everyone’s taste, yet I hope I’ve managed to display just how a few complimentary accessory and garment items, can enable a wearable tech piece, to blend well, and play a pretty vital part, within an on trend outfit choice!

It’s an exciting time for wearables, and are considered as being ‘the bridge between you and your phone’. If you’re interested in finding out a little more about being smart, and how you can mix style with purpose, click here, to find out more. I will also be uploading a Youtube video soon, where I talk a lot more in depth about the functions and fashionable advantages, these wearables prove to have shown me! I’d love to know your opinions on whether you think wearables are fashionable, and if you would consider wearing them with your every day outfits?! I do hope you’ve enjoyed this post, and remember to let me know your thoughts in the comments below, I really look forward to reading them.

OZ-1 | Wearable Tech Designer Spotlight

i2style oz-1

If you’ve read my previous post, regarding my love for the wearable technology industry, you will know that researching for up and coming Designers within this creative field, is going to be something i’ll be focussing on, further into the future. I’ve been pinning my favourite concepts for a while now, and my latest pin is what gave me the inspiration for this very post.

I came across a pin, that displayed a wearable technology item in video format. Once the short video came to an end, I found myself wanting to find out more, immediately. This item is something of a statement, fashionable quality, combined with an every day ‘scent’ solution! Intrigued? Then read on…

A product design student from Singapore, named Wei Kiat Law, was one of 2013’s Electrolux’s, Design Lab finalists. He came up with the clever creation of integrating refined technology and design to make OZ-1! To understand the OZ-1 a little better, just picture this scenario for a moment: It’s Monday, you’re feeling fresh (ish) from a lazy Sunday pamper evening, you’re at work and had the most productive morning. You planned your attire down to a T, due to the important meetings you have in the afternoon, then, BAM! It hits you. The stench of someone else’s cigarette smoke, on your lunch break, seeps into your freshly washed cashmere cardigan and you’re worried your not going to appear, or smell for that matter, quite the tip top way, you had envisioned!

Providing you’ve worn your OZ-1, over or under your collar, its combined functions of trapping chemicals, such as tar, (produced by a burning cigarette) and its air purifying technology, aka, using an ozone generator and HEPA filters…your favourite garments may have been saved, including the air you’ve been breathing in. Using aroma therapy, this divine little device also distresses your environment, enabling a more calmer and collected you!

If that hasn’t impressed you enough, here’s the bit I like! The OZ-1 design concept, shows that it is delicate enough to be hidden, yet features an unusual and unique outlook appearance, enabling that fabulous fashionista, to flaunt what some may think is a striking, statement accessory item! The user can also change up the look of the piece and give it a more personalised finish, by changing the cover design!

Ofcourse there are questions surrounding this design, including how much air it really filters, etc, however for a young student, with such innovative ideas, I’d say he’s come up with quite an impressive concept, and all these elements can be developed and refined, if he was to take this further. People like this, feed and inspire my creative mind, and I cannot wait to find more designers to feature and showcase, upon my blog!

My love for Wearable Technology

Pauline van dongen

i2style kovert

What I adore about the innovative, forward thinking, wearable technology industry, is that it’s giving Fashion purpose. One that’s other than just for aesthetical reasons. By 2018, the wearable technology market is supposed to be worth £4.9b in revenue, as opposed to the £1.6b, it saw in 2012. Get ready to get techy gals & guys!

Whilst interning at Grabble, I had the opportunity to attend FashTech, an event connecting Fashion and Technology Start-ups, held at London College of Fashion. To me, this unleashed an interest of mine, to a new level. The ambition and motivation, behind not only the Start-up founders eyes and voices, but also of the 350 attendees, was pretty inspiring.

I aided Grabble with networking and the promoting of the site, resulting in new contacts – in terms of users and Designers. All visitors who approached us, complimented the fresh concept the company had too, which, although my role was Intern based, still made me feel pretty proud to be a part of something that could have a very valuable, and unique reputation, in the future of online shopping/technology! (Go grabble gang!)

At the event I was able to see other creative technology concepts that I can see going far, when used and advertised in the most efficient way. One that particularly caught my eye was Bodi.Me, a virtual sizing website/technology enabling consumers to online shop in a much more concise way! During the event, Bodi.Me used a 3D scanner to get all your measurements, however in the comfort of your own home, Bodi.Me allows you to scan your full body, just by you standing in front of a webcam! The results display on the website and can be updated anytime. If like me, you’re sick of visiting one store for your top half and another for your bottom, due to sporting totally different sizes, or, it’s becoming inconvenient to be one size from one retailer and a completely different one from another, Bodi.Me gives you a great insight into the online shops you can buy from, using your exact body measurements, saving your time and money!

Since the event, I’ve been doing a little more research into the true concept of wearable technology and I must say, I am impressed with the finds and can’t wait to see what the future holds for this innovative industry! Online based companies, such as Intel, have worked in collaboration with some of these new concepts and innovators, discussing in visual video format, how wearable technology could affect their fields. After finding this, I have watched every clip and feel that the more awareness spread, like this, can only be a good thing in enabling more and more technology lovers and designers, to get even more creative!

I particularly admire what Designer, Pauline Van Dongen is doing with solar powered clothing. Pauline states “Wearable technology is able to connect different industries that were not connected before”, which is the greatest innovation right there! Fashion is the 2nd biggest polluter, so if the industry can turn that around to create garments in a more sustainable, yet visually appealing way…I think they’re onto a winner! Pauline implements solar powered technology into an item, which, if stood in the sunshine for up to two hours, can in turn charge your mobile phone from 0 to 100%! Impressive right?! See the video here, to see what you think about the idea!

There are so many more designers that I want to acknowledge and almost become a voice for, to spread awareness. As a result, I’d like to choose a favourite of mine every week, and give you lovely readers more of an insight into, not only wearable technology, but garments and accessories that ooze great aesthetically pleasing design. Watch this space style lovers!
